On the swaying deck of the voyaging canoe Makali'i, Chadd Paishon watched master navigator Mau Pialiug quietly bite into a soft yellow substance wrapped in tī leaf. Mau gave Chadd a taste of maar (preserved breadfruit) and he was blown away. He began to think about ō (traditional Hawaiʻi voyaging foods) and what it would mean to shift food practices on the canoe. This was one impetus behind Hanauna Ola, ʻOhana Makaliʻi's program to re-establish voyaging traditions, including provisioning a canoe voyage with food 100% grown and made in Hawaiʻi. Three years of learning and reconnecting to ʻāina, and Hawaiʻi provisions fueled the 2019 voyage to Moku Manamana. When Hōkūleʻa set sail in 1976, 50 years later, tens of voyaging canoes have been born and many smaller waʻa. Perhaps most importantly though, reconnection to all mea Hawaiʻi was set in motion, with food as a critical area still being pioneered by folks like ʻOhana Makaliʻi.
